With colonies on the moon, Mars, and Ganymede, humanity has finally spread into the stars. Technology propels a new golden age, science becomes the focal point of advancement, and corporate intrigue slinks in the shadows while fashioning the future through manipulation.

Sadly, not everyone shares in the grandeur of this new era.

It’s been three years since his medical discharge, but Graham Denyevech still stumbles through a life without purpose. In desperate need of change, he eventually hits rock-bottom and accepts a private security job, working for the same type of corporate entity he’s always loathed.

His new employer quickly vindicates Graham’s low expectations. While the work takes him across the solar system, Graham witnesses the underhanded dealings of the corporate world. Each mission pulls him further down the slope of moral ambiguity, and when he unearths something that implicates the company in dangerous and illegal experiments, he faces difficult choices of his own.

Is there room for morality in the future of human civilization? And, if there is, what price would he pay to do what he believes is right?

Where to begin? Well for starters, I like the world that the author wants to bring readers into. It speaks to the mystical qualities of a future that humanity has yet to experience, and also reflects on the complexities and simplicity of life in that future. I think he does a very good job at several things throughout the course of the book. First off, is his character development and creation. The wide assortment of characters (ex. polarizing characters like Harper and Bear) hep make the plot more realistic to the average reader. Having characters that are capable of great feats of action or who find themselves caught in an internal war between morality and pragmatism is one thing, but to be able to make those individuals come across as people who could actually exist in reality is another thing altogether. Secondly, his descriptions of the environment around the characters. For those like me, we appreciate details; both small and large. It opens up the portals to our imagination and lets us, in a way, be the unseen specter observing the events that are unfolding before us. (Kind of like Arwen when she sees the child she will have with Aragon as she goes to return to the elf homeland.) Imagination is critical to getting your audience to connect with your work. If people fell a connection that excites them and captivates their emotions and mental creativity, they'll keep coming back to you for more. I felt like this area was probably on of the greatest strengths in this book. Thirdly, is the way in which the author subtly and strategically set the stage for future events in the next installments (i.e. foreshadowing). The plot of Solace is laced with hints of a larger conspiracy, more powerful and sinister forces at work, and the growing sense of urgency and concern that many (Graham included) have for the fate of humanity and the larger implications that their work will have on the future. A bit of mystery in anything, be it a relationship, book, or TV show, is a good thing and can go a long way, if done properly. In this case the author did, however, I feel that maybe it might help make things a bit clearer for the audience if he shed more light on the things he’s hinted at throughout the story. I'm not saying the author needs to make things blatantly clear and spell out future plot lines/climaxes. I do think, however, that he could fill in his readers more on what lies on the periphery of the story, without fully lifting the veil of mystery that is in place.

Planes of Solace No Room in the Sky Book 1 eBook J Andrew Gula Reviews

excellent sci-fi book. I'm not much of a fan of sci-fi unless it's "plausible" but this book hits all the marks for me.
Here's a look at a possible future in space, and back down to Earth. I hope another story is unfolding now in the mind of this up and coming author. Well written, J.A.G.!
A great story! I enjoyed reading it. I wish there was more, but the story was action filled. Graham is a great character for this story.
I don't read a lot of sci-fi books but I thoroughly enjoyed Planes of Solace! It immediately draws you in by piquing your curiosity and then keeps your attention with it's incredible characters and thrilling story. Can't wait to read the next book!
Planes of Solace was a book that drew me in from the very start. The characters had great depth and had very intriguing back stories. There are many characters, but they are characters you want to know more about because of their interesting, and, at times, covert story lines. The relationships that developed between some of the characters added to the tension of the story, and the witty banter back and forth between the characters was a highlight of the book. The moral struggle that is presented to the main character in the book was one that was very entertaining and thought provoking. It triggered many questions about how I would react if I was in the same scenario. The big highlights of the book, for me, were the character depth and development and the action/fighting sequences. I would definitely recommend this book, and cannot wait for a part two!
I have to open with a disclaimer--the author of this story is a friend of mine, and I've served as a reader since the conception of this story, both as a friend and also an avid consumer science fiction. Since this is his first published worked, Drew Gula asked me to provide my honest review, and I shall endeavor to do so.

So, PLANES OF SOLACE--what is it and why should you care? Well, it's space-based science fiction, where humanity is in the adolescent stage of their journey to the stars. Space travel, commerce, and habitation throughout the solar system is the norm, and more advanced technologies that will lead to other stars are in their early stages.

Now this isn't an entirely uncommon setting, but I found it refreshing in comparison to more conventional sci-fi with more established and advanced technology. The scope of this particular story is narrow, focusing on Graham Denyevech, a washed up Australian commando who gets recruited by the secretive Annalur Developers, one of the many corporations in the increasingly lucrative and cutthroat world of space-focused technology. Graham is picked to be the leader of a motley crew tasked with securing Annalur's interests, and must navigate the uncertain landscape of this brave new world, guided by a moral compass that appears less relevant with each mission.

If that summary sounds interesting, the question now is--is it any good? My aspiration-ally unbiased opinion is yes. Graham serves as a relatable character without being a blank canvas, which is ideal for a story about moral quandaries. The supporting cast of characters has limited room to develop, as can be expected in a short story, but all have distinct personalities and the more predominant ones, particularly Graham's superior, Talia Freeman, get enough room to be genuinely intriguing characters. The story covers a full and satisfying arc, while introducing the world and characters and setting up for more to come.

I won't pretend that the short story debut of a new author will shake the pillars of science fiction. But I think it's entertaining and well-executed, and with some substance to chew on--and I think that's worth looking into. I hope you agree.
